How do I pay for things onboard?
Cruise ships are cashless. Your cruise card or app is linked to a credit card, and purchases are charged to your onboard account, settled at the end of the cruise.
How much should I budget for gratuities?
Most mainstream lines add a daily service charge per guest, typically in the range of about $16 to $20 or more a day depending on the line and cabin. Many luxury lines include gratuities. Check your line’s current rate.
Is a drink package worth it?
Only if you would drink enough every day to exceed the package price. Remember most lines require all adults in a cabin to buy it.
What is the dress code?
Smart casual most evenings, with one or two dressier nights on many lines. Some lines, such as Viking and Virgin Voyages, have no formal nights.
Does my phone work at sea?
At sea, phones connect to the ship’s maritime network, which can be very expensive. Use airplane mode and the ship’s Wi-Fi package instead, and check your carrier’s cruise plan.
Can I bring alcohol onboard?
Policies vary by line. Many allow a limited amount of wine or champagne at embarkation, sometimes with a corkage fee, and prohibit spirits.
What do I do on sea days?
Relax by the pool, visit the spa, attend talks and classes, see shows, try new restaurants — or do nothing at all.
